Our
public education drive has been largely facilitated
by island-wide seminars hosted by Attorneys employed
to the Agency and the distribution of) brochures and
pamphlets, as well as Will Forms to assist the clients
in putting the advice they receive into practice.
Realizing
that the average cost of accessing legal services can
be quite prohibitive, all our public relations activities
are offered and done free of cost.
In
addition to our usual seminars, we have, since February
of this year, staged two (2) Legal Fairs geared towards
reaching a larger target audience, while offering free
drafting of Wills on spot, among other services. The
first such fair was staged in Kingston, and the other
in Spanish Town. The response to this ‘new’
product of the Agency has been overwhelming. Plans are
in the pipeline for the staging of at least three (3)
more Fairs before the end of the current financial year.
Discussions are far advanced with the Police department
who constitute a significant number of the estates we
presently administer, to stage a fair exclusively for
them at the site of the Police Academy. We are looking
too at hosting a fair for our fellow civil servants,
who quite understandably are finding it increasingly
difficult to access private legal services. Our objective
is to partner with each other to assist each other.
Our intention with respect the range of services to
be offered, is to get sister agencies on board for these
events, so that our customers can avail themselves of
all or most related services all in one location.
Other
plans include our “Office for a Day”, which
seeks to relieve some of our more rural clients of having
to travel into Kingston by our taking the office to
them. This initiative was conceptualized in light of
the fact that the Agency does not have the regional
or affiliated offices, so clients are left with little
or no option at present but to take a trip into Kingston
to access our services. The first parish/region to benefit
from this event will be Montego Bay/Western Jamaica.
The event is to be staged over two days on the 29th
and 30th of September 2005, and will see Attorneys and
Paralegals assisting existing clients with information
and processing of their administration matters with
the department, as well as accepting documents from
potential new clients. We plan to replicate this event
throughout the Island during and beyond this financial
year.
